Brief description
An Early Medieval gold filigree and garnet disc pendant dating to AD 650-700, found in Abridge. The pendant is circular in plan. It is decorated on one side with a filigree wire which runs along the outside border. At the top of the pendant the wire has become separated and runs into the interior. The design of an equal-armed cross is created by the application of four filigree triangles in the top right, bottom right, bottom left and top left quadrants of the face. Within each of the triangles are two filigree figure-eight designs – one with equal-sized loops running parallel to the border of the pendent, and another with a larger ‘bottom’ loop arranged above the first and perpendicular to the border.
The centre of this face of the pendant is composed of an empty circular setting (now distorted) out of which radiate four triangular settings (to the top, right, bottom and left), the top and bottom of which appear to contain garnets. The opposite face (the reverse) of the pendant is plain except for a scar at the top, probably from the missing suspension loop.
